EA is allowing NHL 19 pre-orders to be played early unless you ordered the Standard Edition. Seems wrong that if you do not purchase an edition with loot boxes you cannot access the game early.

  1. Seems like the only way EA will stop their cash grab habits is if people that typically buy their games, stop buying their games. They ruined Battlefront in my opinion. Sending them angry letters along with $60 for their games isn’t teaching them the lesson I think many people think it’s conveying.

  2. Look.

Once again, EA is a company, beholden to their shareholders, first and foremost.

They don’t make games “for the fans”. They don’t make games “because they’re nerds”. They don’t make games for any reason under the sun other than “they’re fucking profitable”.

Their SOLE reason for existence, like every other company on the planet, is to make money.

They offer varying products, at varying price points. To maximize their revenue and profits, they offer incentives to get customers to spend more.

It “doesn’t seem right” that to get the colour of car I want, rather than what’s on the lot, I have to pay more. It “doesn’t seem right” that to get a comfier seat on the plane, I have to pay more.

But that’s how it is, That’s business. Games are 100% a luxury item. Gaming is 100% a leisure activity. You have a choice… do you want the premium experience with early access? Then you can pay for it (and many do, if they didn’t… this wouldn’t be an option), if you don’t… then don’t pay for it.

Stop using terms like “this isn’t right”, and “they’re greedy”.

Business IS greedy. Business is about making fat cash. It’s about meeting market demand, and maximizing cash flow. There is a market, EA meets it. Period.

The only way it changes, is if the market no longer makes it a viable business model. The market exists. People love loot boxes. They love extras. They love premium, super-special editions with special costumes and hairdos. They are willing to pay for it.

Bottom line… if you owned a business, you’d want to maximize your profits, no?

You know what you’re getting into. They’re not misleading you.

  3. Multiple devs do this. Play Shadow of the Tomb Raider early by buying the Croft Edition. Play Forza Horizon 4 early by buying the Ultimate Edition. This isn’t anything new.

  4. None of those things relate the same the to purchasing an edge in a competitive game. The fact that “people will pay” doesn’t make your product justifiable or morally right. Do you let heroine dealers of so lightly?
